This cougar is approximately a year and a half old, which is the age they would have their first litter. You can see how young she is by the fading of the spots on her hindquarters and eyes are changing from the beautiful blues of the cub to the amber of the adult. Her eyes are still a greenish hue. This piece is painted in gouache (an opaque watercolor medium) and by using this medium, which can be used in a translucent style for the sunlight hitting the rocks or in an opaque technique for the fur on the cats. I was looking for a fluid motion when composing this piece. I drew attention initially to the mother’s head with leading lines, and then linked each animal from the tail to the head in a circular motion, keeping the eye moving from animal to animal in an unconscious way. This print measures 26"x18" and is a Giclee Paper Print.
